Simple Ways to Reconnect With the Routines That Help You Feel Your Best
As summer winds down and fall is in full swing, life often begins to settle into a different rhythm.
Schedules become fuller. Vacations are over. Work and family routines pick up again. The days gradually become shorter, and before long, the holidays will be approaching.
This time of year can be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with the routines that help you feel your best.
But there’s something important to remember:
You don’t have to start over.
You can simply begin again from where you are.
When Your Routine Changes
Summer can bring a little more flexibility into our days.
Maybe meals were less structured. Maybe your usual walking routine changed. Maybe you traveled, enjoyed more gatherings, or simply relaxed your normal schedule.
That’s life.
Healthy living isn’t about maintaining the exact same routine every day of the year.
It’s about learning how to adjust when life changes—and then finding your way back to the things that support you.
Fall can be that opportunity.
Start With What Makes You Feel Good
Instead of asking yourself, “What do I need to fix?”
Try asking:
“What helps me feel my best?”
Maybe it’s eating breakfast instead of rushing out the door.
Maybe it’s taking a walk after dinner.
Maybe it’s drinking more water throughout the day.
Maybe it’s getting back to a consistent bedtime.
Maybe it’s preparing a few meals or snacks ahead of time.
These aren’t complicated changes.
They’re simply routines that support your body and make your days feel a little easier.
Bring Back a Little Structure
One of the benefits of fall is that routines often become more predictable.
That can make it easier to create some structure around your health.
Think about three areas:
Your Meals
Returning to regular meals can help you become more aware of hunger, fullness, and your food choices.
You don’t need a complicated meal plan.
Start with simple, balanced meals that include foods you enjoy and that help you feel satisfied.
Your Movement
Movement doesn’t have to mean a long workout.
As we talked about last month, even short bursts of movement—our exercise snacks—can be incorporated throughout the day.
A few chair squats.
A short walk.
Some resistance-band exercises.
Taking the stairs.
Getting up from your desk and moving for a few minutes.
Look for opportunities to move rather than waiting for the perfect time to exercise.
Your Sleep
Fall is also a good time to revisit your evening routine.
Consistent sleep and wake times, a calmer evening, and giving yourself time to wind down can help you feel more rested and prepared for the day ahead.
Sometimes the routine that supports your health begins the night before.
Don’t Let “Busy” Push Your Health to the Side
As schedules become busier, it’s easy to put yourself last.
You take care of work.
You take care of family.
You take care of everyone else’s needs.
And suddenly, your own meals, movement, rest, and time for yourself are what get pushed aside.
This fall, try thinking about your health differently.
Taking care of yourself isn’t something you have to earn after everything else is finished.
It’s part of taking care of the life you’re living.
Even ten minutes can matter.
A simple meal can matter.
A short walk can matter.
Going to bed a little earlier can matter.
Prepare Before the Holidays Arrive
Fall is also a perfect time to establish routines before the holiday season begins.
Once November and December arrive, schedules often become even more unpredictable.
Instead of waiting until then to think about your health, use September and October to find a rhythm that feels realistic.
Ask yourself:
What routines do I want to carry with me into the holidays?
Maybe it’s:
- Eating regular meals
- Drinking enough water
- Moving every day
- Getting enough sleep
- Planning ahead for busy days
- Enjoying special foods without guilt
- Making time for yourself
You don’t need to do all of these perfectly.
Choose the ones that matter most to you.
Reconnect—Don’t Restart
This may be the most important message for this season:
You don’t need to start over.
If you’ve been less active, reconnect with movement.
If your meals have been less structured, reconnect with balanced eating.
If your sleep schedule has shifted, reconnect with your evening routine.
If you’ve been putting yourself last, reconnect with taking care of yourself.
There is no punishment required.
There is no need for an extreme reset.
Just a decision to return to what supports you.
Coach’s Tip
Don’t try to change your entire routine at once.
Instead, choose one part of your day that could use a little more structure.
Maybe it’s breakfast.
Maybe it’s your afternoon movement.
Maybe it’s bedtime.
Give that one area your attention first.
Once it feels more natural, you can build from there.
Your Fall Wellness Challenge
This month, choose three routines that help you feel your best.
Write them down.
For example:
My Fall Rhythm
I will make time for regular, balanced meals.
I will look for opportunities to move throughout my day.
I will protect my evening routine and sleep.
Then ask yourself at the end of each week:
“How did these routines make me feel?”
Not:
“Did I do everything perfectly?”
Your goal isn’t perfection.
It’s awareness, consistency, and learning what works for you.
Fall Is a New Season—Not a New You
You don’t need to become a completely different person this fall.
You simply have an opportunity to reconnect with the things that help you feel stronger, more energized, and more supported.
Life will continue to change.
Your schedule will change.
There will be busy days and unexpected days.
That’s okay.
Healthy living isn’t about having a perfect routine.
It’s about having routines you can return to.
So as fall settles in, take a breath.
Look at where you are.
And choose one thing that will help you feel a little better moving forward.
You don’t have to start over.
Just reconnect.
